Echidnocerus cibarius (species)

crab (Echidnocerus cibarius)

This species goes by the common name "Puget Sound king crab", although it's also sometimes referred to as "Lopholithodes mandtii" (a synonym for Echidnocerus cibarius which is not accepted by WoRMS). These are medium sized crabs, with an average size of 15-25cm, covered on bumps and generally coloured a dark red or purple. Their bumps help them blend in with their environment, and generally live fairly deep on the Pacific coast of North America.

Unfortunately this is yet another species which has been threatened by human activity. Photograph by Neil McDaniel, as usual for the Lithodoidea family.
