This crab is more commonly known as the "butterfly crab" and is, appropriately, the type species of its genus (or in other words, the species people think of when they think of Cryptolithodes). It has a butterfly-shaped body with a gray coloured pattern similar to stone, which it uses to blend in with rocks in shallow waters. Large ones are often decorated with vivid colours, which vary significantly between individuals.
This is another crab you can find in the Pacific, but you won't even need to go diving to find this one; they can be found clinging to rocks in the air when the tide goes out. Like various others in the Lithodoidea superfamily, this crab has been photographed by Neil McDaniel in BC.
